Tammy Anderson - Kindred Ground

What began as a very small family garden and very little knowledge of growing (aside from Tammy’s wonderful memories of working alongside her grandparents in their gardens) has evolved into an agritourism business featuring a wedding & special event barn, a vintage décor rentals business and the recent addition of Buckets o’ Blooms, a cut flower farm venture. Chickens and mini-donkeys on the farm round out the Kindred Ground experience.

“Our cut flowers, herbs, and vegetables are marketed through our roadside stand, on-farm experiences of farm tours and events, and wholesale to local businesses,” Tammy explains.  “We also sold our products at a local farmers market and through our CSA (community supported agriculture.) As our name Kindred Ground suggests, we are about connecting with people and with the earth. It’s important to us and to our customers that we grow our flowers, herbs, and vegetables sustainably, that we sell our products locally, and that we actively support our community.”

As a small family business, Kindred Ground knows it can rely on their seed company to provide outstanding quality, diverse product lines, and excellent customer service. Because they are passionate about growing and living more sustainably, this year’s launch of the brand new Harris Seeds’ Organic Seed Catalog will allow Kindred Ground to expand their organic offerings. Being able to rely on good seed germination and quality plants is critical to a successful business. Tammy also believes that a happy and healthy company culture is just as important as the products and services they provide, because it flows to customers and to the community. “There is so much to learn about farming,” she notes. “There is a saying that when you are just starting out, you don’t know what you don’t know! A company with a knowledgeable staff, who keeps up to date on the growing industry, is able to make product recommendations for our area, and who feels like a partner in my business, earns my business.”

After growing from seed for a few years, Tammy was intrigued by the plugs & liners that so many other growers were using. “The relationships Harris Seeds has with plug & liner companies across the country has enabled us to try many unique varieties of cut flowers that we wouldn’t have from seed.”  She adds, “What a game changer!  The trend in the wedding market allows us to sustainably grow flowers for the do-it-yourself brides and now we can add beautiful lisianthus to our product line.  Happy Day!”
